How Your Work or Career Affects Your Quality of Life

Work is important in all of our lives. When you do work which is right for you, you are energized by your work.

No longer will you dread getting up in the mornings, and commuting to work. Many times a person's desires and interests are not related to the work they do. However, when our work is aligned with our desires then it can be one of our greatest opportunities to express ourselves.

Many times, we don't listen to our hearts when it concerns our career choices, but to minds and choose conventional career path. For many of us, we wake-up mid-career wondering how we ended in such a career. Many of us listen to our parents, grandparents, teachers, friends, and others when choosing a career. Rarely is this a guide to what makes us happy.

In addition, we have a limited viewpoint of our jobs, which is to work the least amount of time possible for the most amount of money. Work should be viewed as a giving activity where you give 100% of your talent and yourself, and receive energy and stimulation in the form of money. With this viewpoint, your goal would be to provide the most of yourself possible, knowing that the returns would match what you put into your work.

Many of us will choose a career path that is safe, rather than following our hearts. We tend to take the path that will provide us with a guaranteed paycheck instead of the one that our hearts and dreams would want us to follow. Every year, college students choose graduate programs based on the safety of the career. These students will often major in ht ?safe? field and minor in a field that provides them with pleasure and enjoyment simply because they are afraid to choose an unconventional program.

Follow Your Heart and Discover Meaningful Work:

We are as a people are afraid to follow our hearts when pursuing our careers. One reason for this is the culture we live in has become over-intellectualized. Since the Scientific Revolution, we have strived to furnish a rational structure or means to everything in our lives. The Scientific Revolution has most certainly improved the quality of life for the majority of people on this planet, freeing us from numerous destructive superstitions.

We are taught at a very young age to make educational decisions, and very seldom are taught to follow our dreams. In our society, it is better to be viewed as an intellect rather than as a dreamer leading many of us to disconnect from our hearts and bodies. Without this connection, many of us find it difficult to sense our true course and follow our desires. Many life coaches work with clients to combine their intellect, emotions, and physical well-being so they function as a complete and balanced person, body, and mind.

A quality life coach should discover from their client what is their passion. When asked, they should be able to answer this question without considering the question. Many times, we believe that if only we think harder about something, the answer will present itself. This holds true when it comes to deciding on a career. The answer to which job we take should not come from our rational, minds, but rather from our heart. In order to connect with our inner most desires, we have to be able to access our true feelings.
